Effective July 2014, the IRIS password is synchronized with the NetID password.

New notifications have now been implemented to assist IRIS users when the synchronization occurs:

  • When your IRIS password has successfully synchronized with the NetID password a confirmation email will be sent.  Here is an example:

To:  Jane Doe

From:  IRIS Password Sync

Synchronization of your IRIS password with your NetID password has been successful for JDOE5, triggered byt the update to your NetID password.  You may now log into IRIS with your NetID password.

When you receive this email, it is safe to log into IRIS with

your NetID password.  If you attempt to log into IRIS before

receiving the confirmation, it is possible that you could lock

your ID for too many unsuccessful logins.

  • There are a few restrictions on IRIS passwords over and above the NetID password restrictions.  If you use one of the invalid passwords, an error will occur when the synchronization is attempted, and your IRIS password will not be synchronized.  In this case, you will receive an email like the one below.  If this occurs, reset your NetID password again and avoid the restrictions that are detailed in the email.

To:  John Doe

From IRIS Password Sync

Synchronization of your IRIS password with your NetID password was attempted for JADOE14, triggered by the update to your NetID password.  However, there was an error message that your chosen password is not allowed in IRIS.  The password formats that are not allowed in IRIS are listed below:

First three characters of the password are identical (e.g. AAA)

First character is ! (exclamation point)

First character is ? (question mark)

To resolve this error, please change your Net ID password again.  In addition to the OIT password requirements, please refrain from using the above IRIS restrictions in your Net ID password.

Should you have questions about your IRIS password, please contact the IRIS helpdesk at irishelpdesk@tennessee.edu.  Should you have questions about your NetID password, please contact our local IT helpdesk.
