Upgrading the SAP GUI for Windows Client
The existing release of the SAP GUI for Windows desktop client that many of our IRIS users run is nearing its end-of-life and will not be supported after December 31st, 2021. In anticipation of this date, we have been testing a new version of the desktop client for a few months now. This newest version (770, patch 2) is now available for general download on the IRIS Web Portal here.
Users who have had difficulty installing the update have reported three common issues to the IRIS Helpdesk. Please see below for more information. If you have any additional questions or need further assistance, please submit a help ticket to the IRIS Helpdesk, and someone will be in touch with you.
Users do not have administrator rights on their machines
If you receive a message stating that you do not have administrator rights on your machine, then you will not be able to install the update. You will need to contact your local information technology or desktop support resource. They will be able to install the update for you.
Windows Defender issues a warning about the file and prevents it from running
Some users have reported a Windows Defender message like the one seen in the screenshot below.
We understand that this message can be concerning, but rest assured, the installation file will not harm your computer. This is the same file that members of the IRIS Team use to install the software on our machines. The warning message comes from a technical configuration limitation with certificate signing.
There is a way to avoid this message, however. Once the file has been downloaded to your machine, take the following steps:
- Right-click on the downloaded file and choose Properties.
- You should see a screen similar to the one below.
- Make sure you check the box beside Unblock (highlighted in the image above).
- Click the Apply button
- Click the OK button
You should be able to execute the file without error after following these steps.
The install runs successfully, but your GUI theme has changed
Some users have reported that their theme has changed once they updated their client. How will you know if this happened to you? Well, IRIS will look a lot different than you are used to! What seems most common is that the theme will be updated to Quartz. This theme is very different from the Blue Crystal theme that most users are familiar with.
Please refer to this help document if you need to update your IRIS theme. Although the document references an older Belize theme, the same steps apply if you’re trying to change from the Quartz theme back to Blue Crystal.
